My name is JC Candanedo and I am a London-based Visual Artist. These images belong to a Lookbook that I shot for Fashion designer Merci Me London. The brief included keywords like protection, preparation, belonging, strength, unity, community, tribe, Autumn, women. The whole shoot was a celebration of community.

⁣Karen Blackett OBE, appointed Race Equality Business Champion by the Prime Minister in 2018, says that in society we must aim for diversity - which is having a bit of everyone -, we must also aim for inclusion - which is giving equal opportunity - and we must offer members of our communities a sense of belonging - which is having everyone’s voices heard.

When you label groups of people using acronyms or words like "minorities", "POC", "BIPOC" or "BAME”, you are basically putting us in a box and reducing us to a statistic. Using words like “minorities” has a negative impact in our communities. It makes us feel less, like we are not that many and like we don’t have an important space in our societies.
