DYSTOPIAN SURVEILLANCE STATE
My name is JC Candanedo and I am a London-based Visual Artist. This is my fashion photography story called Dystopian Surveillance State which I shot in collaboration with Stylist Patricia Machado Medici, Makeup Artist Fabiola Bastianelli, Hair Stylist Rachel Williamson and Model Heather Chung.
Generation Z is the first fully digital generation, which means they didn’t know a time when the internet didn’t exist. Most people born after 1995 have some sort of digital footprint since birth. Those in power are increasingly using this to influence our decisions and manipulate the way we think. Will GenZ ever be able to reclaim their privacy and take back the control over their choices? What does it take to escape the surveillance state...? Is going off the grid even an option?
The shoot came about after a conversation with the Hair Stylist Rachel Williamson and the Makeup Artist Fabiola Bastianelli, in which we discussed how people say that you can’t cross London without being photographed at least 200 times by the surveillance cameras. That made us research ways in which to avoid facial recognition, and we employed those techniques in the makeup and the hair styles. Then Stylist extraordinaire Patricia Machado Medici came up with the wardrobe looks that made our model look like a XXI century spy.
